Apotek Speakeasy Aruba: The Island’s Most Unique Cocktail Bar

Apotek is unlike anything else in Aruba’s dining and drinks scene. Tucked away in a historic building in Oranjestad — somewhere in Klipstraat — it’s a proper speakeasy: reservation-only, hidden entrance, house rules on the door. The name means ‘apothecary’ in Dutch, and the concept runs all the way through — cocktails are served as ‘prescriptions’ from a remedy menu.

It’s quirky, it’s theatrical, and the cocktails are genuinely excellent. Google has it at 4.8 across 416 reviews and OpenTable at 4.9 across 730 (both checked October 2026). If you want one evening in Aruba that’s completely different from everything else on the island, Apotek is it.

The Cocktails

The cocktail menu is built around the apothecary concept — drinks presented as remedies for various ‘ailments’. The bartenders are pioneers of the Caribbean cocktail scene, according to the venue itself, and the skill shows. Classic cocktails done with precision, experimental preparations using local ingredients, and a few surprises that lean into the speakeasy theatre.

Reservations are required and the venue asks that you comply with House Rules on arrival — part of the immersive experience. It’s a small space, intimate, and the atmosphere is unlike anything else on the island.

Finding Apotek

The venue is intentionally secretive about its exact location — they ask you to make a reservation and they’ll take care of the rest. It’s on Klipstraat in Oranjestad, in a historic building that fits the speakeasy atmosphere perfectly. Come with curiosity and leave with a better understanding of what cocktail craft actually looks like.

The prescription menu with prices — checked October 2026

Apotek publishes its own Prescription Menu, and everything below is transcribed from it as of October 2026. It is a short card by design — the printed list is the starting point, and the bartenders write custom “prescriptions” on top of it. Prices are in US dollars.

Painkillers — $15, two shots provided

• Jungleberry Shot — vodka, lime, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, vanilla
• Princess Consuela Banana Hammock — Bumbu rum, coconut, pineapple, lime
• Clarified Piña Colada — white rum, coconut cream, pineapple and lime juice
• Illegal Dose — Ilegal mezcal, Ancho Reyes spicy liqueur, ginger, lime and orange juice

Signature Remedi cocktails — $16 to $18

• Smoke & Mirror — Ilegal mezcal, lime, pineapple, blackberry purée — $17
• Sexappeal — vanilla vodka, Aperol, lime, aquafaba, orange and passion fruit — $16

Old fashioneds and the Negroni list

The card prints no prices for the old fashioned and negroni lists — the signatures above run $16 to $18, and the custom prescription in our photo below was written up at $25, which is a fair guide to what a bespoke pour costs. There is no published food menu; this is a cocktail room, and Google diners put an evening at AWG 20–80 a person (roughly $11 to $45 at the 1.79 florin peg).

Our verdict

The surprise is the pricing: $15 to $18 for the printed list undercuts what most hotel-strip bars charge for far less effort, so the theatre comes almost free. The house call is the Apotek Infamous Smoked Fashioned — the menu flags it, “old fashioned” turns up in fifteen separate review mentions, and the most recent visitor photo pinned to the Google listing is exactly that drink.

The real draw is going off-menu. The top review theme (26 mentions of craft cocktails, 12 of custom drinks) is telling the bartenders a flavour or a mood and letting them write you a prescription — budget a few dollars over the printed card for that, like the $25 Acqua di Rose in our photo.

Know the house rules before you go: this is a 21-and-over room — the bar’s OpenTable listing is literally named “21 and Only” — dress is smart casual, the space is small so a reservation is essential, and Sunday it is closed. It holds 4.8 across 416 Google reviews and 4.9 across 730 on OpenTable (both checked October 2026).
