Renting a car in Aruba is one of the best decisions you can make for your trip. The island is small (you can drive end to end in 45 minutes) but the difference between having a car and not having one is enormous — it’s the difference between seeing 10% of Aruba and seeing everything.
Do You Need a Car in Aruba?
Not every day — but for at least 2–3 days of a week-long trip, a rental car is strongly recommended. Without one, you’re limited to Palm Beach, Oranjestad (by taxi), and whatever organised tours you book. With a car, you can reach Baby Beach, Zeerovers, Arashi, Malmok, San Nicolas, Arikok National Park, the California Lighthouse, and all the quieter parts of the island on your own schedule.
What Type of Car Do You Need?
🚗 Compact or sedan ($50–70/day): Covers 90% of what you want to do — Oranjestad, San Nicolas, Baby Beach, all the beaches, restaurants in Savaneta. Roads in these areas are fully paved and good quality.
🚙 4×4/SUV ($70–100/day): Required for Arikok National Park interior and the Natural Pool (Conchi) road. The road to Conchi is extremely rough — a compact car will not make it and will likely get stuck. If you’re planning the Natural Pool independently (not on a guided tour), you need a 4×4.
Driving Rules in Aruba
🛣️ Drive on the right side of the road (same as the US)
🔢 Speed limits in km/h: 60 km/h on main roads, 40 km/h in towns
🛡️ Valid driver’s licence from US, Canada, EU, UK, Australia required — no international licence needed
⛽ Petrol stations are plentiful and reasonably priced. Fill up in Oranjestad — petrol near tourist areas can be slightly more expensive
🅿️ Parking is generally free and plentiful across the island. Oranjestad centre has some paid parking but most areas are free
Car Rental Operators in Aruba
Major international operators (Avis, Hertz, Budget, National) all have counters at or adjacent to Reina Beatrix Airport. Local operators (Aruba Budget, Economy Car Rental) are often cheaper but may have older vehicles. Book in advance for peak season (December–April) — popular car categories sell out.
Most operators: minimum age 23–25. Valid credit card required for deposit (not cash). Basic collision damage waiver (CDW) strongly recommended — check whether your credit card includes international car rental coverage before buying the waiver.
Car Rental Cost Breakdown

Aruba Car Rental Tips
📸 Photograph the car thoroughly before driving away. Document any existing damage with photos and video, timestamped, before leaving the lot. Disputes about pre-existing damage are the most common car rental issue in Aruba.
⛽ Return with a full tank. Rental companies charge a premium for fuel if you return without refilling — typically 2–3x the pump price.
📱 Google Maps works perfectly in Aruba — download the offline Aruba map before you go for areas without signal.
🚗 Don’t leave anything visible in the car. Car break-ins at popular tourist spots (Natural Pool parking area, Ayo Rock) do occur. Keep bags and valuables in the boot or take them with you.
Not every day, but strongly recommended for 2–3 days to reach Baby Beach, Arikok National Park, Zeerovers, San Nicolas, Arashi, Malmok, and the California Lighthouse independently. Without a car you’re reliant on taxis (expensive for day trips) or organised tours.
Only if you plan to drive to the Natural Pool (Conchi) independently — the road is extremely rough and a compact car will get stuck. For all other destinations including Arikok’s main viewpoints, a regular compact is sufficient. Tour operators take their own 4×4s to Conchi.
The right side — same as the United States and most of continental Europe. Speed limits are in kilometres per hour.
Yes — a valid US driver’s licence is accepted in Aruba. No international driving permit is required. The minimum age for rental is typically 23–25 depending on the operator.
