Most sunset sails welcome kids on the early (5pm) departures, and the calm west coast means little chance of seasickness. Choose a cruise that includes food — children are hungry by 6pm — and one with a swim stop if your kids are strong swimmers. Best Months for an Aruba Sunset Cruise
Every month works — Aruba is outside the hurricane belt and the trade winds keep evenings warm all year — but the sky is different by season. From January to April the air is driest and the horizon sharpest: expect a clean orange ball dropping into a flat sea, and a real chance of the “green flash” a second after it disappears. From May to November there is more high cloud around, which actually makes for the most dramatic colour — pink and purple skies that last 20 minutes after the sun is gone. Sunset itself moves from about 6:15pm in December to 7:00pm in June, so summer sails have a longer golden hour. Boats sell out fastest between Christmas and Easter; in low season you can usually book two days ahead.
Sunset Cruise or Sunset on the Beach?
Honest answer: if it is your first evening, the beach at Eagle Beach with a drink from a beach bar is free and wonderful. The cruise wins on the second or third night because you get the sunset and the view back at the island — the whole high-rise strip lighting up, the California Lighthouse blinking on, the water changing colour under the boat. Most visitors do both. If you are only doing one and budget matters, do the beach; if you want the memorable one, do the boat.
After the Cruise: Dinner Near the Piers
All the sails return to Palm Beach between 7 and 7:30pm, which puts you in the middle of the island’s densest restaurant strip with an appetite. What to bring: a light layer (evenings can be breezy on the water), swimwear if the boat has a water slide or rope swing, your phone/camera in a waterproof case or dry bag, cash tips for the crew ($5-10 per person is appreciated).
