Aruba Shore Excursions by How Long You Are in Port
The single most useful way to pick an Aruba cruise excursion is by your port time. Most ships dock in Oranjestad for 8–10 hours (some stay until late evening), but a few call for only 5–6. Here is what realistically fits.
Short call (5–6 hours in port)
Stay close. A catamaran snorkel sail is 3 hours and departs from piers 15 minutes from the ship, so it fits comfortably. The Atlantis Submarine and the Seaworld Explorer semi-submarine leave from the harbour itself, right beside the terminal, and take under two hours. Or take a $20–25 taxi to Eagle Beach (10 minutes) for a few hours on the sand — rent two loungers and an umbrella at a beach hut and you are done.
Standard call (7–9 hours in port)
This opens up the island’s best-sellers: a UTV or jeep tour to the Natural Pool, Arikok caves and the California Lighthouse (4–5 hours, pick-up available at the port), a snorkel sail plus a beach afternoon, or a half-day at De Palm Island (all-inclusive beach island with snorkelling, water park and lunch — the boat leaves 10 minutes from the port). Parasailing at Palm Beach takes an hour and pairs well with lunch on the strip.
Long call (10+ hours or overnight)
You can do a morning island tour and an afternoon on the water, or a full-day private boat charter. Getting Around From the Aruba Cruise Port
The terminal is in downtown Oranjestad, a 5-minute walk from the Renaissance Marketplace, the main shopping street and the free streetcar that loops through the old town. Taxis are fixed-rate (no meter): roughly $10–12 to Eagle Beach, $15–20 to Palm Beach, and about $25–30 to Baby Beach at the far south — agree the fare before you get in, and share with another couple to halve it. The public Arubus (bus 10) runs from the terminal past Eagle Beach to Palm Beach every 15–20 minutes for a few dollars, and is a perfectly good option if you are not on a tight schedule. Ship Excursion or Book Independently?
Aruba is one of the safest islands in the Caribbean to book independently. The port is central, the roads are good, English is spoken everywhere and the main operators (De Palm, Red Sail, Pelican, Jolly Pirates and the private catamarans) run to the clock because so much of their business is cruise passengers. Booking through Viator or directly with the operator is usually 20–40% cheaper than the same tour sold on board, and most listings offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The one rule: choose a tour that ends at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and confirm the operator picks up at or near the terminal. If your ship changes its schedule, independently booked tours in Aruba are used to it — operators check ship arrivals each morning.
Aruba Cruise Port: Practical Information
Aruba’s cruise terminal (Port of Oranjestad) is in the centre of the capital, L.G. Smith Boulevard. Ships dock at Pier 1 (largest vessels up to 5,500 passengers) and Pier 2. The terminal has duty-free shops, a tourist information desk, official taxi rank with fixed-rate fares, and a dedicated area where tour operators meet booked passengers. Walking to downtown Oranjestad shopping takes 5-10 minutes. The De Palm pier — departure point for most water-based excursions — is a 10-minute taxi ride toward Palm Beach. Taxis have government-fixed rates: Palm Beach $13, Eagle Beach $15, Natural Pool area $35.
