Four hours is about the shortest call cruise ships make at Aruba, and it is enough — if you pick one plan and skip the rest. Aruba is unusually kind to short calls: ships dock at the Port of Oranjestad (there is no tendering), and you walk straight off the ship into the capital. From the terminal gate to Royal Plaza Mall, where the shopping streets begin, is about 400 metres — five flat minutes on foot. Every fare and time on this page comes from the same official sources as our full Aruba cruise port guide, checked September 2026.

First, the honest math
Four hours ashore is really about three. Your deadline is the all-aboard time printed in the ship’s daily program — not the sail-away time — and you want to be walking back along the waterfront with minutes to spare rather than testing it. Budget the last half hour for getting back; whatever is left is your real shore time. That rules a few famous things out (we list them below so you do not waste your call finding out), but each of the three plans here fits comfortably.
Plan 1 — Downtown on foot, for free
The terminal sits inside the capital itself, which is the whole trick of a short Aruba call. Walk off the ship into the Renaissance Marina area, follow L.G. Smith Boulevard for five minutes to Royal Plaza Mall, and you are in the middle of Oranjestad: the pastel Dutch-colonial facades of Main Street, the free streetcar that loops the shopping streets, Fort Zoutman, and the waterside restaurants of Renaissance Marketplace. No taxi, no bus, no timetable — and you are never more than a short walk from the gangway. If you only have one stop in you, make it lunch at the Marketplace and a slow loop back along the boulevard.
Plan 2 — The Eagle Beach dash
If a short call must include sand, Eagle Beach is the right beach: it is the closest of the famous ones, about ten minutes from the terminal at a flat official fare of $28 per car each way for up to four people. Aruban taxis have no meters — fares are fixed by the government — so there is no negotiating and no surprise. Taxi out, two good hours under a divi-divi tree, taxi back from the same spot. The public bus is $2.60 each way and drops you across the road from the sand, but on a four-hour call take the taxi at least on the way back — a bus timetable is not something to bet an all-aboard on. Exact stops and the bus option are in our port-to-Eagle-Beach guide. Palm Beach, the high-rise strip, is $33 and about ten minutes (guide here), but with only four hours Eagle is the better swim for the same ride.
Plan 3 — A glass bottom boat, five minutes from the ship
The glass bottom boat is the one boat trip built for a short call: departures leave from the Oranjestad waterfront near the cruise terminal — a five-minute walk from the ship — and the tour runs 1.5 to 2 hours over the Antilla shipwreck and the Boca Catalina reef without you ever getting wet. The rule we give every cruise reader holds here: choose a departure that leaves at least 2.5 hours before your all-aboard time. Done right, you are back on the boulevard with time for Main Street before you board.
What a four-hour call cannot do
Being straight about this is the point of the page. Baby Beach is 25 km away at the far southern tip — about 37 minutes each way and $68 per car — a wonderful lagoon that belongs to longer calls — our 8 hours in Aruba guide gives it the half day it deserves. The Natural Pool is 45–60 minutes inland and is done as a guided jeep tour, effectively a full day. A catamaran sail runs about three hours plus the ride to the departure pier, which only squeezes into four hours if every timing aligns — with six or more hours it is one of the best things on the island. And the famous pink flamingos: Flamingo Beach day passes are released online the Saturday before and sell out, so that one takes planning, not luck.
The fares, so you can decide on the gangway
| From the cruise terminal to | Official taxi fare (per car, 1–4 people) |
|---|---|
| Eagle Beach | $28 |
| Palm Beach (high-rise hotels) | $33 |
| Arashi Beach (snorkelling) | $43 |
| Baby Beach (San Nicolas) | $68 |
| Airport (AUA) | $27 |
A fifth, sixth or seventh passenger adds $3 each, and the minimum fare is $10. Add a flat $5 on Sundays, on official holidays, from 24 December to 1 January, and between 11pm and 7am. All rates come from the Government of Aruba’s official fare calculator at taxi.aw (effective 20 May 2026, checked September 2026). The Arubus bus is $2.60 a ride, $5 round trip, $15 for a day pass.
