Everything below was checked in October 2026 against the Renaissance resort’s own day-pass portal, Marriott’s island pages and Google Maps. Prices and rules change, so re-check before you sail — and all-aboard times are your ship’s business, not ours, so build in slack.

The quick answer
Aruba’s famous flamingos live on Renaissance Island, the private island of the Renaissance Wind Creek resort in downtown Oranjestad — and you cannot simply turn up. Day visitors need an Island Pass at $125 per person (the price on the resort’s own portal when we checked in October 2026), and passes for each week are released every Saturday at 9am for the Sunday-to-Saturday that follows. They sell out: on the Tuesday we checked, that same day’s passes were already gone. The transport, by contrast, is the easiest on the island — the resort is about a 20-minute flat walk from the cruise terminal, and the water taxi to the island is included with the pass.
How the Island Pass works
- $125 per person, taxes and fees included, booked on the resort’s online day-pass portal — up to five guests per booking.
- Passes are released every Saturday at 9am for the following Sunday through Saturday. For a cruise call that means booking the weekend before your port day, not on the morning your ship arrives.
- The pass covers island access and the water taxi. Food, drinks and cabana rentals are not included, and the island is cashless — bring a card.
- The island’s beaches run 7am to 7pm daily per Marriott’s island pages, which suits a port schedule well.
Hotel guests get the island as part of their stay, which is exactly why day passes are limited. The portal is the only sales channel the resort publishes — if the calendar shows your date sold out, plan something else rather than hoping at the dock.
From the ship to the water taxi
The resort sits at L.G. Smith Boulevard 82 in downtown Oranjestad. Google Maps puts the walk from the cruise terminal at 22 minutes — 1.6 km, mostly flat — along the waterfront. A taxi covers it in about seven minutes, and a short hop like this falls under the official $10 minimum fare on the Government of Aruba’s price list. From the resort, the complimentary water taxi takes you across in minutes — Marriott’s own line is that the boat brings you to the 40-acre island “in minutes”.
Adults only on Flamingo Beach
Renaissance Island has two beaches, and the distinction matters more than any brochure admits. Flamingo Beach — where the birds actually wade — is set aside for adults only, in Marriott’s own words. Families are pointed to Iguana Beach, the island’s family side. If the whole point of your stop is a child’s photo with a flamingo, check the current rules with the resort before you spend $125 a head.
For lunch there are two spots on the island: Papagayo Bar & Grill — our guide has its full menu with prices — and the Mangrove Beach Bar. Both are card-only, like the rest of the island.
Is it worth a port day?
If you land passes, this is the easiest marquee experience Aruba offers a cruise visitor: no road transfer, a flat walk or a $10 cab, beaches open from 7am, and you are minutes from the gangway all day. The catch is cost and timing. $125 a person is $625 for a group of five, and the Saturday release does not care when your ship arrives. Compare the $2.60 bus to Eagle Beach and this is clearly the splurge option — a spectacular one, but a splurge.
If passes are sold out
You can still build a strong day on or near the water:
- Seeing the island without a hotel stay — the honest answer on what is and is not possible.
- The Antilla shipwreck snorkel sail we book directly — from $89 an adult, sailing the Malmok reef stretch.
- The beach umbrella and two chairs we set up ourselves — $100 a day plus tax, already standing at Eagle Beach or Palm Beach when you arrive.
- Or browse the excursions that actually fit port calls.
The verdict
Flamingo Beach from a cruise ship is a planning game, not a transport game. The transport is trivial: a flat 20-minute walk or a $10 cab, then a free boat. What decides your day is the previous Saturday at 9am. Set an alarm, book the moment passes open for your week, and keep a plan B from the port guide ready in case your date is already gone.
