Serene by the Sea sits directly on Mangel Halto beach in Savaneta, on Aruba’s quiet south-east coast. At 9.6 out of 10 from 106 guests it has the highest score of any property in this guide — but it is a tiny, host-run guesthouse a long way from the hotel strip, and that is the whole point of it.

What Serene by the Sea actually is

A small beachfront guesthouse with a free breakfast buffet, a terrace, a garden, private sun loungers and kayaking and snorkelling straight off the property. There is no pool, no restaurant and no kitchen in the rooms. There is also no front desk — a host meets you. Around $148 a night in low season.

Location

354 Savaneta, in the De Bruynewijk area, right on Mangel Halto — one of the best shore-snorkelling spots on the island. The airport is a 15-minute drive, Baby Beach 14 minutes, Renaissance Island 21. Everything nearby is a drive rather than a walk, so a rental car is effectively required.

Rooms and facilities

Rooms have air conditioning, sound-insulated walls, rainfall showers, hairdryers, 32-inch cable TVs, balconies, coffee and tea makers, free WiFi and daily housekeeping. Beach towels, barbecue grills and sun loungers are provided. In-room massage can be arranged. There is an electric car charging station and free self parking.

Practical details worth knowing

  • Check-in is 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM only — a narrow window, so plan your flight and car hire around it.
  • There is no front desk. Check-in instructions are emailed within 24 hours of arrival.
  • Check-out before noon, contactless check-out available.
  • Dogs are welcome at $10 per pet per night. Service animals stay free.
  • Cribs are not available. Minimum check-in age is 18.

Who it suits

Self-sufficient travellers with a car who want water on the doorstep, quiet, and snorkelling without a boat. Bringing a dog is a genuine advantage here — almost nowhere else on the island allows it. It is wrong for anyone who wants resort service, nightlife or walkable restaurants.
