But Aruba can be done on a budget if you know where to eat, where to stay, and how to spend your days without paying resort prices for everything.

Where to Stay on a Budget in Aruba
The big Palm Beach hotels (Ritz-Carlton, Marriott, Hyatt) are the island’s priciest rooms, especially December to April. Budget alternatives:
🏠 Guesthouses in Noord and Eagle Beach area: Small family-run guesthouses in the residential areas near Palm Beach cost a fraction of the beachfront rates and give you independent access to the beach strip. Search for options in Noord and Tanki Leendert.
🏠 The smaller Eagle Beach hotels: Amsterdam Manor and Manchebo Beach Resort are significantly cheaper than Palm Beach luxury options while being steps from a world-class beach.
🏠 Travel May–June or September–November: The same hotels cost a good deal less in shoulder season. The beach is the same beach.
Budget Eating in Aruba
Zeerovers — The Best Value Meal on the Island
Zeerovers in Savaneta is where local Arubans go for lunch. Fishermen sell their catch directly, it’s fried to order, and you eat at picnic tables outside. The catch is sold by weight at local prices — Frommer’s puts a main at $12–20 — and it is the best local food experience on the island. Cash only, open 11am to 9pm, closed Mondays.

Local Bakeries — Pastechi for Breakfast
Pastechi (fried cheese or meat pastries) from local bakeries cost $1–2 each and make a filling breakfast. Pannekoek (Dutch pancakes) at Willem’s Dutch Pancakes are a full meal in themselves; Diana’s Pancakes Place and The Dutch Pancakehouse at Renaissance Marketplace do the same trick.
Supermarkets for Snacks and Beach Food
Super Food Plaza in Bubali — on the road between Oranjestad and the Palm Beach hotel area — is the big full-size store closest to the strip, and Ling & Sons, about five minutes from the major hotels, is the other one locals point you to. Stock up on water, snacks and picnic food for beach days: a grocery bag costs a fraction of beach-bar prices.
Mid-Range Restaurants That Don’t Break the Bank
Wacky Wahoo’s — large portions, reasonable prices, lively atmosphere. Old Cunucu House — authentic Aruban food at fair prices. (For mid-range to upscale dining, see Olivia Mediterranean Restaurant or Wilhelmina Restaurant in Oranjestad — both are higher-end options worth budgeting for on a special evening.)
Free Things to Do in Aruba
🏖️ All public beaches are free. Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, Arashi, Malmok, Baby Beach — no admission, no fees.
🚶 Oranjestad walking tour. The Dutch Colonial architecture, Wilhelmina Park, Fort Zoutman exterior, marina views — all free.
🎨 San Nicolas street art. 60+ murals on public streets, completely free to walk and photograph.
🦎 Wildlife spotting. Aruba’s iguanas, parakeets, and the wild donkeys of the Donkey Sanctuary are all accessible for free or very little cost.
🌅 Sunsets. Every evening, from any west-facing beach, for free.
Budget Activities Worth Paying For
Some things are genuinely worth spending on even when budget travelling:
🎟️ Shared catamaran sail: our own three-hour sail and snorkel off Palm Beach is $70 an adult and $45 a child, with a $14 deposit online — a shared boat costs a fraction of chartering the whole thing.
🚗 Car rental for a few days:our cars start at $50 a day (three-day minimum, 13% online and the rest at pickup) and get you to Baby Beach, Arikok, Zeerovers, and San Nicolas without taxi fares — split two ways, that is $25 each a day.
🏜️ Group jeep tour: the Natural Pool is not accessible without a 4×4, and group tours start from about $99 a person on the live Viator list on this page; our private jeep is $700 for the whole jeep for up to four, with Arikok’s $16-a-person entrance paid separately.
Budget Travel Tips Specific to Aruba
📅 Travel May–June. Noticeably cheaper hotels, same weather, fewer crowds.
🚌 Use Arubus, the public bus. A single ride is $2.60, a round trip about $5 and a day pass $10, with buses along the hotel strip every 15 minutes from early morning (less often after 6pm) — and routes run on to Savaneta, so you can reach Zeerovers without a car.
💵 Know the currency. The Aruban florin is pegged at about 1.80 to the US dollar and dollars are accepted everywhere; if a card terminal offers to charge your home currency instead of florin or dollars, decline — that conversion rate is the bad one.
🍽️ Eat where locals eat. Zeerovers, local bakeries, and the restaurants in Noord and Savaneta offer far better value than the hotel strip.
🏖️ Avoid beach bars for drinks. Buy drinks at a supermarket and bring them to the beach — all public beaches allow this.
Aruba is mid-to-high cost for the Caribbean, but it’s manageable on a budget with the right choices. Staying in guesthouses off the Palm Beach strip, eating at Zeerovers and local spots, using the Arubus public bus, and travelling in May–June cuts the daily spend to a fraction of the resort-package numbers — the room is the only big line left.
September–November is the cheapest time, with hotel rates at their annual low. May–June is the best balance of low prices and excellent weather. Avoid December–April if budget is a concern.
Aruba is roughly comparable to St Lucia, Barbados, and the Turks & Caicos in terms of pricing. It’s more expensive than Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, but safer and with more reliable weather. The secret is knowing where to eat and stay off the main resort strip.
