History of Aruba’s Gold Rush
Gold was discovered in Aruba in 1824 — part of a broader Caribbean gold rush. The Balashi Gold Smelting Works were built in 1899 to process ore mined from across the island’s interior. At its peak, Aruba produced significant quantities of gold annually, and the ruins of the processing facility are what remain today.
The gold rush ended in the early 20th century when the ore deposits became too sparse to mine profitably. The site was abandoned and the equipment left in place — now rusted, overgrown with cacti, and slowly dissolving into the Aruban landscape.

The Balashi ruins consist of stone walls from the original smelting buildings, the remains of ore-crushing machinery, and various industrial artefacts scattered across the site. The scale of the operation is larger than most visitors expect — this was serious industrial activity, not artisanal mining. How to Visit the Gold Mine Ruins
The easiest way to see the gold mine ruins is on a guided jeep or UTV tour — most north coast tours include a stop at Balashi as part of the route. Independent visitors can drive to Balashi (approximately 15 minutes from Palm Beach via the main highway south), park at the site and walk around freely. There’s no entry fee and no on-site staff. A 4WD vehicle isn’t required to reach the main ruins — the access road is passable by regular car.

The gold mine ruins are most naturally combined with the California Lighthouse, Arikok National Park and the Natural Pool on a full north coast day. Most jeep tours cover all four stops in a 4–6 hour circuit. The ruins themselves need about 20–30 minutes to explore properly.
