About Groteberg Snack
It opens early and closes early: 7am to around 3pm Tuesday to Saturday, and 8am to noon on Sunday and Monday. From the road it does not look like somewhere you can sit and eat, and that is roughly true; this is a snack counter, and most people take theirs away. The johnny cakes are cooked when you order, so expect to wait ten to fifteen minutes, longer when it is busy, which reviewers agree is worth it. Several people say a local waitress or a hotel worker sent them here, which is how the best places in San Nicolas usually get found.
What reviewers mention
Johnny cakes that are hot, fresh and, in more than one reviewer’s words, the best on the island; a clean counter; the wait; and how far the money goes. Order a few different fillings and share.
Getting there
Groteberg Snack is on Grote Bergweg in San Nicolas, at the far south-eastern end of the island, about 25 minutes from the hotel strip. If you are staying on the hotel strip, a rental car is the easiest way to reach it and everything else on this side of the island; taxis add up fast at night.
