Why Bring Your Own Snorkel Gear to Aruba
🐢 Better fit = better experience. Rental masks often leak. Your own mask, fitted to your face, stays sealed. The difference in snorkeling enjoyment is significant.
🐢 Shore snorkeling is free. Boca Catalina, Arashi, and Malmok are all excellent shore snorkeling spots. With your own gear, you snorkel these for free anytime. Renting gear every day costs $15-25/day per person.
🐢 Hygiene. Shared snorkel mouthpieces from rental operators are cleaned but shared.
🐢 Spontaneity. You can pull over at Malmok or Boca Catalina any time during a driving day.
What to Pack
👓 Mask — The most important piece. A silicone-seal mask that fits your face shape eliminates leaking. Try on at home — press against your face and inhale through your nose; if it stays without touching the strap, it fits. Mid-range masks ($30-60) from brands like Cressi, Mares, or Aqua Lung are far better than cheap alternatives.
🌬️ Snorkel — A dry-top snorkel with a splash guard prevents water entering when waves wash over. Not essential in Aruba’s calm western waters but useful on catamaran tours.
🦶 Fins — Full foot fins are compact to pack and significantly improve speed and efficiency. Not essential for very casual snorkelers but worthwhile for anyone who wants to cover reef distance.
👟 Water shoes — For rocky entries at Boca Catalina and Malmok. Lightweight, pack flat.

What NOT to Pack
❌ Heavy full-foot diving boots. Water shoes suffice for Aruba’s reef entries.
❌ Full wetsuit. The water is 79-85°F — a rash guard for UV protection is all you need.
