Half the “Aruba” souvenirs in the cruise-port shops were printed somewhere far from the Caribbean. Here is an honest guide to what is actually worth carrying home from the One Happy Island — the local goods with a story, the classics that hold up, and the tourist traps to walk past.

Worth Buying

1. Aruba Aloe products

Aruba has grown aloe since 1890 and the Aruba Aloe factory is one of the few in the world producing on-island. After-sun gel, lotions and soaps — genuinely local, useful, and airport-security friendly. Tour the Hato factory or buy at their shops island-wide.

2. Island-designed apparel

Skip the generic “ARUBA” tank printed overseas and pick up designs actually made for the island. Our sister store Aruba Wear designs tees, hoodies and caps in Aruba — flamingo-state-of-mind tees, the Aruba flag vanity plate, turtle-conservation hoodies — and ships home to the US, Canada and worldwide, so your suitcase keeps its space.

3. Papiamento with you: “Dushi” anything

“Dushi” — sweet, lovely, dear — is the island’s favourite word, and locals actually use it. A dushi mug, tee or beach tote is the souvenir that starts conversations back home. (Learn a few more words in our Papiamento guide.)

4. Local hot sauce & pica di papaya

The island’s papaya pepper sauce shows up on every local table. Small-batch bottles from markets and food shops travel well in checked bags and cost a few florins.

5. Aruban art from San Nicolas

The street-art capital also has small galleries and artist shops selling prints and ceramics you will not find at the port. Combine with the murals — see our things to do guide.

6. Duty-free jewellery — done carefully

Oranjestad’s duty-free jewellers can be genuinely good value on watches and diamonds, but only if you know prices at home first. For a no-pressure option, see our private jewelry appointment guide.

Skip These

Shell and coral trinkets — often imported, sometimes illegal to export or import home. Generic cruise-port tees — same shirt, different island name. “Cuban” cigars near the terminal — authenticity is a coin flip, and US customs does not care either way.

Quick Answers

What is Aruba famous for buying? Aloe products, duty-free jewellery and watches, Dutch cheeses, and island-made apparel and art.

Is shopping in Aruba cheap? There is no sales tax on most tourist purchases, and duty-free applies at many Oranjestad stores — luxury goods can beat US prices; everyday souvenirs are similar.
