Getting Around · Aruba
Taxis, rental cars, public buses, scooters, and pre-booked transfers. Getting around Aruba is simple — here is what works best for each type of trip.
Aruba is small — 20 miles long — but its best beaches, national park, and landmarks are spread across the island. The right transport depends on what you want to do. If you are staying on Palm Beach and mainly doing organised tours, you may not need a rental car at all. If you want to explore independently, rent one.
Most flexible option. A 2WD rental car ($45 to $75/day) covers all paved roads including Eagle Beach, Palm Beach, Oranjestad, Arashi, Baby Beach, and the California Lighthouse area. Book ahead in peak season — they sell out.
4×4 needed for: The Arikok National Park interior tracks and the Natural Pool access road. A standard 2WD gets you to the park entrance.
Driving rules: Drive on the right. Home country licence accepted. No international permit needed for most nationalities.
Taxis — available at hotels, the airport, and taxi stands throughout Palm Beach. Aruba taxis do not use meters — fares are set by the government. Always confirm the price before getting in. From the airport to Palm Beach is approximately $25 to $30.
Arubus (public bus) — covers the main corridor from Oranjestad through Eagle Beach to Palm Beach. Inexpensive (around $2.25 per trip) and reliable for the tourist strip. Does not reach Baby Beach or Arashi.
Scooter rental — fun option for solo travellers or couples exploring the main roads. Dusty on the unpaved north coast tracks.
