Oranjestad’s colourful Dutch colonial architecture. Fort Zoutman. The waterfront promenade. Street art, local markets, and the best local food in Aruba. The capital rewards walking.
Oranjestad is compact, walkable, and full of character. The capital has some of the Caribbean’s best-preserved Dutch colonial architecture — pastel-painted buildings, red roofs, and a waterfront that has been the island’s commercial heart for centuries. A half-morning walking tour covers the main sights comfortably.
Fort Zoutman and Willem III Tower — Aruba’s oldest building, dating to 1796. Now a museum. The orange tower beside it hosts the weekly Bon Bini Festival on Tuesday evenings.
Wilhelmina Park — waterfront park with statues and a view of the cruise ship pier. Good starting point for the walking route.
Main Street (Nassaustraat) — the pedestrianised shopping street with the most concentrated examples of Dutch colonial architecture.
Seaport Market — daily craft and souvenir market at the waterfront.
Guided food tours of Oranjestad are one of the best ways to experience real Aruban cuisine. Typical stops include a keshi yena tasting, pan bati at a local bakery, fresh fish at the market, and ending at Zeerovers in Savaneta (a slight detour but essential).
Self-guided food walking: start at Wilhelmina Restaurant for lunch, walk through the market, then drive to Zeerovers for the best meal of the trip.
Book the Natural Pool jeep safari and catamaran tours for the full island experience.
